Commercial vs Personal Use
When choosing an Intrinio subscription, one of the most important questions is how you plan to use the data. Your intended use determines which plan is appropriate and what rights you have under your license.
In general:
- Personal use is for an individual using the data for themselves.
- Commercial use is for a business or organization using the data in support of its operations, products, or services.
Personal Use
The Individual Plan is designed for a single person using Intrinio data for their own internal purposes.
Examples of personal use include:
- Learning financial analysis or API development
- Personal investment research
- Academic or educational projects
- Building prototypes for your own use
- Internal analysis that is not shared outside of yourself
With the Individual Plan:
- One user (one seat) is permitted.
- Data may only be used internally by that individual.
- You may not display, redistribute, resell, or provide the data to others.
- The plan is intended for non-commercial, personal use only.
Commercial Use
Commercial use means the data is being used by or for a business, regardless of whether the business is currently generating revenue.
The Startup Plan is intended for companies that need to use Intrinio data in a commercial application or business workflow.
Examples of commercial use include:
- Building a fintech application
- Displaying data to customers
- Internal dashboards used by employees
- SaaS products
- Research platforms
- AI or machine learning products
- Investment tools offered by a business
- Client reporting
- Any application owned or operated by a company
Even if your company is:
- Pre-revenue
- A startup
- A side business
- A sole proprietorship
- Still in development
…it is still considered commercial use if the data supports a business or commercial product.
Can I Start on the Individual Plan and Upgrade Later?
Yes.
Many customers begin experimenting on the Individual Plan while evaluating the API. Once they are ready to build or launch a commercial application, they can upgrade to the Startup Plan.
Both plans include the same core data package. The primary difference is the licensing rights—not the included APIs or datasets. The Startup Plan adds commercial usage rights appropriate for business applications.
When Do I Need an Enterprise Plan?
Most businesses can begin with the Startup Plan.
An Enterprise engagement is typically appropriate if you require capabilities such as:
- Reselling or redistributing raw data
- White-label licensing
- Premium or custom datasets
- Raw exchange-sourced real-time market data
- Exchange approvals
- Custom rate limits
- Dedicated support or service-level agreements (SLAs)
- Custom licensing terms
If your requirements extend beyond the Startup Plan, our Enterprise team can help determine the appropriate solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm building an app, but it isn't live yet. Is that commercial use?
Yes. If you're building the application for a business or with the intent to launch commercially, the Startup Plan is the appropriate choice.
I work for a company but only I use the data. Can I purchase an Individual Plan?
No. If the data is being used on behalf of a business or organization, it is considered commercial use, even if only one employee accesses it.
I'm a student. Which plan should I choose?
If you're using the data solely for coursework, research, or learning, the Individual Plan is generally appropriate. If the project becomes part of a commercial business or startup, you should upgrade to the Startup Plan.
Can I share data from my Individual Plan with teammates or clients?
No. The Individual Plan is licensed for one person only and does not permit sharing, redistribution, or external display of the data.
